Planning music for an outdoor stage

An outdoor stage isn't a big indoor room. Sound carries differently, the crowd comes and goes, and the weather gets a vote. Here's what we plan for before a festival set.

Sound with no walls

With nothing to reflect off, low end drops away quickly and wind pushes sound around. We work with the production crew on speaker placement and agree on levels before doors open.

Power you can count on

Generators and shared circuits can sag when lighting and food vendors draw power at the same time. We ask where our power comes from and bring protection for the gear.

A weather plan

Covers for equipment, a raised setup off wet ground, and a clear call on when to pause are agreed in advance, not improvised in the rain.

Sets that match the hour

An early-afternoon crowd is wandering, eating, and finding friends. The evening crowd came to dance. We build each slot for the people actually in front of the stage at that time.
